Home » Breaking News » Status Update: Yoho Valley Road to Takakkaw Falls Late Opening

What is happening?

Due to  larger than average avalanche debris on the upper Yoho Valley Road we are unable to open this area of Yoho National Park at this time.  Parks Canada staff are working hard to assess and remove the debris. We appreciate your patience, the upper Yoho Valley Road will open when it is safe to do so.

Why is this happening?

This past winter saw high snowfall with a historic avalanche cycle and a lingering snowpack that continues to impact higher elevation visitor facilities and trails. Avalanche danger is still present in high altitude areas of the mountain national parks and we ask that people plan ahead by checking our websites and trail reports before heading to the mountain parks.

What does this mean for you and our visitors?

  • Parks Canada has been welcoming visitors throughout the 2017 season as we celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday and we continue to prepare for the summer season ahead.
  • The Yoho Valley Road is open up to the Meeting of the Waters Lookout (approximately 2 KM from the Trans-Canada Highway).
  • We appreciate your patience as we work to remove this debris as safely and efficiently as possible.
  • Though the valley bottoms in many areas are snow free, alpine areas remain snowbound. Make sure you have planned your route ahead of time, check the trail report and avoid avalanche terrain. Do not go off route to avoid compact ice or snow, and if trail conditions are too snowy or icy, turn back. Please plan ahead by stopping in at a Parks Canada Visitor Centre or by visiting our website to get the most up-to-date information:
